The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization convened a meeting in Cordoba, Argentina October 1-4, 2001 to evaluate the health and nutritional properties of powder milk with live lactic acid bacteria. The Expert Consultation evaluated the latest information and scientific evidence available on the functional and safety aspects of milk probiotics. It provided FAO, WHO and their Member States with scientific advice in relation to the nutritional and safety assessment of probiotics, in particular powder milk with live lactic acid bacteria; provide general guidance for the assessment of these probiotics and any specific questions arising in relation to their pathogenicity, toxigenicity, allergenicity or other specific features relevant to their nutritional properties or safety.
